Anthurium, commonly referred to as flamingo flower, is a tropical species known for its shiny, heart-shaped foliage and a striking, colorful "flower" that is actually a waxy spathe. This spathe encases a central spike known as a spadix, which holds numerous tiny, true flowers. These plants are favored as houseplants due to their long-lasting, eye-catching blooms that come in a range of vibrant shades, including red, pink, orange, and white.
They flourish in warm, humid, tropical environments, thriving in bright, indirect light. Anthuriums are appreciated not only for their enduring ornamental beauty but also for their capacity to enhance indoor air quality. They favor warm, stable temperatures, ideally ranging from 18°C to 30°C (65°F to 86°F). Being intolerant to frost, they need protection from cold drafts or temperatures falling below 15°C (59°F), which may cause harm.
Anthuriums thrive in bright, indirect sunlight; direct sunlight can burn the leaves, while insufficient light leads to fewer blooms. Locations such as east or west-facing windows are usually optimal. High humidity is essential, preferably between 60% and 80%. Regular misting, the use of a humidity tray, or placing them in a naturally humid space like a bathroom can help replicate their native rainforest habitat.
They need a well-draining, nutrient-rich, and acidic potting mix, such as an orchid blend with perlite or coir peat, to avoid root rot. Water them well when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch, and if possible, use rainwater or filtered water, as they can be sensitive to hard tap water.
